Since he was a boy, Stephen Halpert has always felt connected with
art.
During his adult life his extensive knowledge and appreciation of
American literature and social history has found expression in his
writings and since the mid 1980's through his iconic collage which an art
critic in Worcester Magazine referred to as "paper pictures."

 Bernat Mill Fire
|
Having worked in publishing and contributed to numerous magazines
including his weekly American Scene column in The Grafton News, he also
founded and published the little magazine Outpost and wrote and edited a
number of books, including,
A Return to Pagany, published by Beacon
Press; Brahmins and Bullyboys published by Houghton Mifflin; and
Witness of the Berrigans, published by Doubleday.
|
His initial experiments with creating handcrafted buttons expanded into a
grand pictorial wall hanging, a history of baseball entitled "The Baseball Wall
of Fame." This large collage fused baseball memorabilia, buttons, and photos
and launched his exploration of collage as an expressive medium.
| Since then, he has created over a hundred
canvasses and numerous coffee tables, including "Hollywoodland", "Let's Make
Smoking History", and "A Cat's Tale".
His unique process of visual anthology presents history through
artistic expression. He has also created other works consisting of cubist
and abstract design as well as provocative social commentary and satire.
He is currently adding cloth and found objects to his "paper pictures."

In many of his iconic works he combines snippets of famous art in
innovative and clever ways to create new pictures and explore new themes.
His unique images challenge traditional perspectives and his joyful sense
of humor often peeks through unexpectedly.
